Ode to music ensembles

Cello, trombone, brass, guitar, strings, and our School Choir – our Spring Concert showcased the excellence of music ensembles across Wetherby Senior.

This week’s Spring Concert saw over 150 parents and pupils enjoy an eclectic range of music, from popular classical pieces (such as Beethoven’s Ode To Joy) to classics from popular films (like Pirates of the Caribbean), before concluding with songs from the much-loved musical Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Mr Martin, Head of our Music Department, said: “It was fantastic to bring live music back to Wetherby Senior on such a large scale. After our Cello Ensemble opened with Klaus Badelt’s Pirates of The Caribbean, we had two energetic jazz performance from our Trombone Ensemble. This was followed by Guitar Ensemble with two very enjoyable pieces, both arranged by our very own Mr Quinaterelli.”

Our Spring Concert next featured our Year 7 Brass Roots Band, performing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, When the Saints Go Marching In, and Beethoven’s Ode To Joy. Mr Martin explained: “Our Brass Roots Band is an excellent example of the talent of our Year 7 boys and the success of our Wetherby Brass programme, which teaches all in our youngest year group to play a brass instrument.

“Our String Ensemble then played with a great style and quality of tone, drawing the audience into their performance, before our Brass Band staged some foot tapping tunes – Misirlou, Cat Came Back! and Colonel Bogey. Next month, our Brass Band will tour Jersey, so we wish them the best of luck!”

Our Spring Concert concluded with our School Choir performing songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Mr Martin was full of praise for all but highlighted the particularly strong solos by Yu, Graydon, Lucas, Redford and Freddie.

Our Music Department’s next events will be our Brass Band Concert (Wednesday 30th March) and our Summer Concert (Monday 4th July).
